Granted www.cpuscorecard.com doesn't really clarify what benchmarks they use, but in their estimation, a dual 1.25GHz Mac beats a 2.4 Ghz P4 by a hair, and is just a little behind a 2.8 GHz P4. Likewise, a 800MHz G4 is very comparable to a 1.8 Ghz P4. The important thing that I see in this ranking is that in perusing the rest of this website, the people who came up with these ratings do not look to be particularly Mac friendly.

Based on this, I would have to disagree with your assertion that "the g4 cannot beat the p4 in performance", unless your only criteria for performance is sheer GHz speed. It seems to me that at the high end, the two chips are at least competitive, and in the middle of the pack, I would say that Macs are a better buy.

That's what I figured. I've got an online order in already but I might as well give waiting in line one more shot, what have I got to loose?

I find that it corrupts the database when it reaches 2GB in storage, no matter how many messages are involved.

Try reaching that limit again. You will surprise yourself.

This would greatly improve the usability of airplay, in my opinion.

Imagine you had your TV on some random channel, while surfing the internet on your iPad. If your TV supported AirPlay, then you could just click the Airplay button on your iPad, and the random channel would be changed to the Airplay content. You wouldn't have to change the tuners over to Apple TV. Much more convenient.

    Exactly.

Fumbling for a different remote to change the input-channel on the TV is currently a minor barrier to using it. Especially when you just want to show a photo or something quickly.

This also falls in line with Steve Jobs' own comments about AppleTV when he said "No one wants another box".

    Let's see...

Most successful desktop operating system: Microsoft Windows.
Most successful server operating system: Microsoft Windows Server.
Most successful office suite: Microsoft Office.

Three good reasons (and there would be more like Exchange Server, Sharepoint Portal, SQL Server, Visual Studio) to also have confidence in the man if he were hired as a product manager.

Like it or not, Microsoft still is the most IMPORTANT software company around, and they don't hire incompetent idiots either.

Before I start, I want to be clear: I see no problem with Apple hiring this guy, I'm sure it was an intelligent, well-reasoned decision regardless of whether or not it works out.

    However, you're just being silly.

Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office were entrenched into the market well over a decade ago, but that doesn't make the current incarnation of the company good at new product development any more than AT&T's history would make it automatically the best cell phone carrier. Visual Studio, Exchange, and SQL Server are enterprise level products, and Apple is not primarily an enterprise-driven business. If you exclude the Xbox (which is only just now starting to pull a profit), the last 5-10 years of Microsoft new consumer-level product development is objectively a sad, profitless story.

(As an aside, including Sharepoint in that list is hilarious. Three out of three companies that I've worked for while Sharepoint was around jumped on that bandwagon and abandoned it in disgust in a year or less. As packaged it is a worst-of-everything-but-hey-at-least-you-have-one-of-everything mess.)

Of course, none of this has anything to do with system administration/architecture, which was the point of the post you were replying to. I'll agree, up to a point, that Microsoft's issue is one of vision, direction, and organization, not engineering talent. The up-to-a-point is that you'd have to be a bit of a weenie (or very risk averse) to be top tier graduate talent to have your whole world at your disposal, and of all the possibilities in the world you'd choose Microsoft over a start up, research group, or more, erm, with the times big corporation (e.g. Google).** Of the CS majors I personally knew in my graduating class at MIT, six work for Google. The only one that works for Microsoft was a business major.

** - Unless you were lucky enough to find a specialized group that Microsoft is dumping research money into that happens to align with what you want to do academically.

I figured this out last night poking around in System Profiler on the new Mac Mini display unit in the local Apple Store. There was a new, separate entry for "Card Reader" that I hadn't seen before. Lo and behold, there it was, "SDXC", supporting 2.5GT/s (that's 2.5Gbps before taking into account the all the data transfer protocol overhead).

Doing some more poking, I found in the Ethernet section the fact that the new Minis use a Broadcom BCM57765 (http://www.broadcom.com/products/Ethernet-Controllers/Enterprise-Client/BCM57765) controllerwhich just happens to also include the memory card reader controller, which supports SDXC.

According to a Digg.com story (http://digg.com/apple/Mac_OS_X_10_4_8_Final_BUILD_to_be_Released_in_the_Next_Few_Days), Apple has seeded OS 10.4.8 Build 8L2125 to developers. According to the poster (named "appledev"), no significant issues remain which could indicate a release within days.

The Intel Version weighs in at 206 MB, with the PowerPC Version weighing in at a significantly less 30.8 MB. Previous rumors indicated significant work was being done on Rosetta, which could explain the substantial size difference (although Intel versions have typically been larger, as Mac OS 10.4.7, released in June (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/06/20060627161810.shtml), was 133 MB Intel and 64 MB PPC). Other previous (unconfirmed) rumors have indicated that, among other enhancements and bug fixes (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060829081002.shtml), OpenGL may have also seen performance improvements (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060910001852.shtml).

Woohoo! I have always wanted to be able to watch C-SPAN from somewhere besides my living room. Nothing will help you to fall asleep on the train better than some C-SPAN. C-SPAN 2! and 3! even better!:D

I find listening to HSN is quite entertaining actually... It's funny to watch their middle age post-C-section Real Housewives of Scranton, PA (HSN home, right?) try to fumble through presenting the latest $499 laptop from Dell. Comical... sure is funnier than anything that's come from Fox int he last 5 years, hehe.

But you were, by your choice, responding to itcheroni, and his/her quoted points had nothing to do with your ongoing diatribe against all things even tacitly related to Republicans.

Itcheroni's post used the same argument form as many democrats have used when defending President Obama. I found that ironic, so I threw it out there. Admittedly, it was a bit off topic, but considering the big picture on taxes and spending and how bad things could have gotten involves national politics, I didn't think it was so far off to derail the thread.

As an aside, who do you think advocates for lower taxes, the Austrian economic fallacy, and the theory that spending cuts alone will fix all our problems? Is it really possible to debate this without acknowledging who we are talking about?

I'd be happy to stand up and praise anything related to the Republicans. It's depressing to not have much to cheer about. Where are all the reasonable Republicans I knew and respected? Why aren't they the ones standing up to this? They used to.

Genetic tests for identification usually take up to 5-10 days, but usually more than 2. Technology. heh.

We can sequence an entire genome in about two weeks now a-days. (just a few years ago that took about 10 years).

If your in a hurry you can pull off a simple parental genetics test (quite old technology) which is what this would be in a matter of hours. This stuff is child's play in the modern era.

    Don't imagine you've found a conspiracy .

Wouldn't using the "extra" electricity to power fans to decrease heat lead to less "extra" electricity???? I hope they really think this through - and I'm sure they will. Of course powering fans isn't the only use for electricity.

Haha, exactly what I was thinking.

Sometimes, the app store restrictions are a bit ridiculous, and when Apple realizes that they're dealing with people who know what they're doing, they remove those restrictions quickly.

All this image shows is that the person measuring the white iPhone 4 has no idea how to use a caliper. The idea of a caliper isn't to squeeze the crap out of whatever you're measuring. It is obvious that the in the right picture they are squeezing much harder just looking at the discoloration of the persons skin on their thumb.

Sorry sir, but you are wrong. The difference is only in the post-process of the images. Your "perceived" skin discoloration is because the second image has a higher level of contrast, thus blowing away the highlights and enhancing the midtones and shadows.

According to her blog she left Microsoft months ago and went to work for (I think) VMWare

    Ah, to bad :(

It was helpful to have a shortcut into their Mac development team. I tried to deal with the German support team - which I think is the same that also handles the Windows crowd - and I got the impression that Office for Mac issues are just a tiny blob on their screens.
I got them so far as to acknowledge that they can reproduce the bug in PowerPoint. However they then told me that they can not get through to the people in the US and that even if they could the developers would not listen to them anyway - go figure...

Hmmm..., well, you don't mention which OS you are running, but I'll assume OS X, so if that is the case, the OS should recognixe the drive. I only say this because I replaced a DVD-ROM in a Pismo Powerbook with the Combo drive that comes in an iBook, and the OS recognized the drive fine. The optical drives in a tower all share the same connectors on newer machines, but I can't speak towards an 450 AGP because I never owned one. I've switched several drives in a G4 733 Digital Audio, and never had any problems. The only thing I would suggest is after installation, you make sure to download the latest Apple firmware for the Pioneer '05 model.

    Regards,
    Gus

I've deleted "Old Categories" and everything in it. Thanks for your many hours of work Eraserhead.

I think the next big project might be to reorganise the Guides category by adding appropriate subcategories such as (for example) Mac Hardware Guides, Mac OS X Guides, iPod Guides etc. It's getting quite large as it is, and it might make it easier to find relevant articles.

I've gone under anesthesia twice now, once under general anesthesia for a broken and dislocated arm, and on the other under a peridural for the removal of a pilonidal cyst directy above my tailbone (not nice).

I'll tell you straight away the general anesthesia was MUCH worse. I was about 12 at the time, and it was all pretty smooth throughout. Don't try to cheat while fasting, otherwise you'll almost certainly throw up. I stayed under observation for about two days, and it was worth it. When I was told I could walk, I went to the bathroom with some help from a nurse to take a bath (or at least rinse a little) and fainted (the only time in my life). I woke up a little later on the bed, still a little dazed. After that it was hard to keep food or drinks down, too. I'm absolutely certain it was the anaesthesia, since I was only on paracetamol and I have NEVER had ANY problem with that, and I have migraines once every two or three days (genetic thing).

During the cyst operation, which happened in january of this year, the peridural was smooth. I was given something to make me sleepy, since I told the anaesthesiologist it would be boring and I'd be annoying him with questions about how everything was going "down there". I could "walk" fine after I laid on my gurney for a couple of hours, though you have to remember that a surgeon had just removed all the tissue above my tailbone. First time I had ever seen a nurse I deemed "hot as hell".

Anyway, yeah. Good times. Oh, and both were IV. According to my father, who is a surgeon himself, gas is hardly used nowadays, and the main reason for it to be used is if the person does NOT want needles. If its general, you'll probably be woozly later and feel light-headed, although it might be local for you, I'm not sure. It seems scary to be awake while someone is cutting you with a scalpel, but you really feel nothing at all. For kicks, get someone to film you when you wake up, it can get really funny. :p

    P.S. First post, yay.
